UN opens resource centre - Unesco centre at Khanapara enables easy access to info

Nov. 25: The UN Resource Centre for Northeast Region, set up at Khanapara here, will enable citizens to easily access the latest information on activities and projects undertaken by the United Nations concerning different issues of global interest.

The centre happens to be the first of its kind in the country.

The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) has instituted the centre in collaboration with the United Nations Association, Assam.

Rajiv Chandran, the officer-in-charge of the United Nation Information Centre for India and Bhutan, formally inaugurated it during a function organised in the city today.

Apart from officials of the UN, several senior officials of the state government are also members of this resource centre.

“All new and old information, publications and the latest data on different UN Global projects relating to education, science, health, culture, environment and human rights will be available at the UN Resource Centre for Northeast Region. This is the first time such a resource centre has been specifically established for a particular region in the country,” said Ashwini Sarma, executive director of the resource centre.

Apart from this, the resource centre will also be responsible for initiating varied projects of the UN in all the northeastern states.

“The UN at present has 27 agencies, which undertakes different global programmes from time to time. This resource centre will also begin these projects and see to their implementation in the Northeast,” added Sarma.
