Dhubri, Aug. 13: Security forces killed four suspected Ulfa rebels in two separate incidents in Nalbari and Bongaigaon districts in the wee hours today.

The army killed two Ulfa militants at Chotemari in Nalbari after a brief encounter a little past midnight.

One 7.62mm pistol, a bullet, a grenade and IEDs weighing 5kg were found on the slain militants.

In a joint operation at Sanyasini Pahar in Bongaigaon, police and the army gunned down two Ulfa militants in an encounter around 2.40am. Two German-made revolvers, two bullets, five empty cartridges and two mobile handsets with as many SIM cards were found on the duo.

Police sources in Bongaigaon said they were tipped off about a group of Ulfa militants belonging to the outfit’s 709 battalion taking shelter at Sanyasini Pahar. They were armed to carry out subversive activities in the run-up to Independence Day celebrations across the state. The superintendent of police, Bongaigaon, Lachit Barua, said: “We got specific information about their hideouts and accordingly chalked out a plan. On seeing the joint security team moving closer to Sanyasini Pathar, the militants hiding inside huts opened fire. The forces retaliated and a fierce gunbattle continued for some time, leading to the death of two militants.”

Under cover of darkness, the other members of the group escaped. The bodies of the two slain militants have been brought to Bongaigaon for post-mortem.

RDX haul: In a joint operation, the 3 Sikh Regiment and Assam police recovered 2.25kg RDX in the form of 10 solid sticks with black coating from Borkona Pahar under Mancachar police station of Dhubri district around 3.30pm today, the subdivisional police officer (SDPO), South Salmara-Mancachar subdivision, Gulzar Hussain, said. The police said Ulfa was probably ferrying the consignment.
