Agartala: The Tripura electoral authority is hoping to map over 50,000 people with disabilities in the state for the better conduct of elections, chief electoral officer Sriram Taranikanti said here on Monday.

Addressing a news conference, Taranikanti said according to information provided by the department of social welfare and social education, Tripura has around 80,000 registered disabled persons.

"We are undertaking a massive exercise to map persons with disabilities. We were told to do this last year. However, there was shortage of time and we could cover only 8,000 people," he said.

He claimed that around 51,000 of the people registered with disabilities were voters.

Among them, 26,000 were already "mapped" through computers till date and personnel were dispatched in the field to verify the list. The rest 25,000 are currently being "mapped" according to district and polling stations.

The Election Commission of India is considering the print of Braille-enabled voter slips to help the visually impaired."We hope this exercise will be helpful as knowledge about physically disabled voters will help us to organise the polling stations," he added.

He said an all-party meeting was held on May 10, where representatives of all political parties agreed to the schedule set by the poll panel.

According to the schedule, draft electoral rolls would be revised from September 1 till October 31. The final electoral rolls will be published on January 4 next year.

Statistics from field verification personnel, 8,451 multiple entries, dead voters or other corrections were identified in the electoral rolls. Altogether 9,666 corrections were also done till date. The state electoral authority has started work for special summary revision of photo electoral rolls in the state from May 15.
