Guwahati: Police rescued four girls from Assam, who were trafficked and forced into prostitution, from Panipat in Haryana on Thursday night.

A team of Assam police, with the help of their Haryana counterparts, raided RR Guest House and Restaurant at Shiv Nagar under Chandni Bagh police station at Panipat and rescued the girls, who were confined in a room of the three-storeyed guesthouse.

All the victims, in their early twenties, are from Nagaon district.

Police arrested the alleged trafficker, Rinki Kumar, 28. She is the wife of the owner of the guesthouse, Rakesh, who is absconding.

A police source said the girls were allegedly lured by false promises of jobs in Delhi and then pushed into immoral activities in Panipat.

Police began investigations into this case when parents of a 22-year-old lodged a complaint at Nagaon police station that their daughter had gone missing on March 18.

On March 21, the police arrested Sangita Bhowmik and Rashid Ali for sending the girl to Rinki. The other three girls were taken to Panipat nearly two months ago.

"We have come across many cases of trafficking of girls to Haryana for forced marriage but there were very few instances of trafficking to Haryana for prostitution," said Rishi Kant of the anti-trafficking NGO Shakti Vahini. According to National Crime Records Bureau, 163 women and 130 children were trafficked from Assam in 2016.
