A team of crime branch officials along with Azara police apprehended three fraudsters at the LGBI Airport, who had arrived in an AirAsia flight from New Delhi, on Tuesday.

They are suspected to be a group of ATM fraudsters and the police recovered 130 ATM cards from them along with Rs 91,720 in cash and 10 bottles of cough syrup.

The trio, identified as Junaid Khan, 26, Salim Khan, 31, and Samsad Khan, 27, hail from Mewat district of Haryana.

According to the commissioner of police, Kamrup (metro), Munna Prasad Gupta, the modus operandi of these gangs is all based upon tampering of ATM machines and a nexus between their close friends and relatives, who share their ATM cards for a commission on the crime.

In such cases, the fraudster withdraws money from the ATM but at the same time, the debit message is prevented from being reflected in the bank’s server by using the switch method, a technique created by these fraudsters.

“Upon receiving the amount, the fraudster complains to the bank and the bank concerned complies by crediting the same amount to the account,” Gupta said.

Upon interrogation, the trio confessed to have been involved in similar cases elsewhere, including Delhi and marked Guwahati as their destination to commit the crime this time.
