Jan. 6: The All Guwahati Students? Union (AGSU) today announced an agitation programme in protest against fashion shows which promote ?nudity?.

A citizens? meeting held at Pandit Tirthanath Sarma Sabhaghar under the aegis of the AGSU resolved to carry out a campaign against shows which smack of vulgarity in the name of culture.

AGSU adviser Prince Faizul Haque said the students? organisation has been forced to play the role of ?culture police? to curb increasing incidence of vulgarity.

The meeting, adhering to the All Assam Students? Union (AASU) sermon imposing dress code on fashion shows, urged the government to enforce a blanket ban on shows related to ?nudity?.

AASU imposed the dress code after some of its members allegedly resorted to hooliganism during a fashion show in a city hotel on December 31 last year.

AGSU will take out a procession from Cotton College on January 10 to protest against holding of shows, which go against Indian culture, at hotels, clubs and other public places. The protesters will submit a memorandum to deputy commissioner of Kamrup (metropolitan) A.K. Absar Hazarika.

It was also decided at the meeting that a co-ordination committee of women?s organisations will be constituted to campaign against the forces ?polluting indigenous culture?.

AGSU general secretary Pritam Hazarika said they sent out a warning to all hotel owners in the city at the meeting not to organise any event, which exposes ?nudity? in the name of culture.

Last week, the AASU asked the corporate world not to back shows, which were ?against Assamese culture?.

The meeting made an appeal to all parents and guardians to ensure that their daughters dress properly whenever they come out of their homes.

Eminent women personalities from different walks of life ? Anima Guha, Eli Ahmed, Malaya Goswami, Priti Baruah, Maini Mahanta, Rani Gohain, Sumitra Hazarika, Niru Dutta and Sapna Bezboruah attended the meeting.
