
Guwahati, March 4: The Assam State Disaster Management Authority has alerted all districts following a warning by the Indian Meteorological Department of thundersquall and heavy rainfall tonight and tomorrow.
The Borjhar-based Regional Meteorological Centre warning said: "Thundersquall with wind speed reaching 60kmph is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya on March 5 and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura too. Heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya on March 5. The squalls are expected to pass through Kamrup district from Meghalaya and then to Sonitpur through Jorhat."
"We have received the warning and asked all the district disaster management authorities to remain prepared for storms and thunder. All the line departments have been contacted. The additional district commissioners, who are in charge of their disaster management authorities, were asked to coordinate with all relief-related departments," Rajib Prakash Baruah, state project coordinator, ASDMA, said today.
The Kamrup (metro) district administration today opened toll-free helpline numbers: 1077, 7399003001, 7399003002, 7399003003 and 7399003004 for any emergency.
Earlier last month, thunderstorm, coupled with heavy rainfall, had taken two lives and damaged more than 4,500 houses in Upper Assam.
