Guwahati, May 10: The absence of any representation from the Barak Valley and autonomous councils in the Assam PCC-constituted core committee has triggered intra-party discontent.

The 20-member core committee was constituted on May 4 by the Assam PCC to formulate policy decisions or to take a stand on pressing issues since the regular "jumbo-sized" committee, formed in April, would not be in a position to take prompt decisions, party insiders said.

They also said there was disquiet over non-representation from the Barak Valley and autonomous councils members (from both plains and hills tribes) in the core committee.

Apart from accommodating members from these areas, there is also a demand to include a couple of new faces.

"Barak Valley or for that matter the Bodo belt (for plains tribes) are politically important. Representation from these areas will, we feel, only help the party. More so, when the state unit through the regular PCC committee, was trying to rebuild the party after a series of electoral setbacks. We hope the party brass will look into it or we will have to sound out the high command," one of them said.

Assam PCC president Ripun Bora told The Telegraph, "Discussion is on but no decision has been taken. There is no issue such as non-representation."

The Assam PCC has convened a meeting tomorrow of its district presidents and new PCC office-bearers on the ensuing organisational polls, a must before it can act on its policies to rebuild the party, which is facing a serious challenge from the ruling BJP.

The Congress was unseated by the BJP after 15 years of straight rule at Dispur.
