Dhubri, Oct. 13: The intoxicated antics and vulgar dancing of some youths who were part of the numerous immersion processions that wound their way through Dhubri town on Tuesday have become a nightmare for both the general public and the district administration.

"What has emerged now is nothing but a show of vulgarity by a large section of young participants, most of them are below 18 and dance under the influence of various intoxicants," alleged Pinak Pani Chakraborty, a resident of this town.

Binoy Bhattacharjee, a social worker who resides in ward 15, said earlier, families would line both sides of the roads to watch the immersion processions and bid goodbye to Goddess Durga.

"But now this picture is completely missing and what has emerged instead is not a picture of a decent society. We should not allow these elements to grow and before it is too late, we should think and discuss it with all community Puja organisers in order to change the scenario for the better," Bhattacharjee said.

The secretary of the over century-old Hari Sova Committee, Pradip Kumar Deb, expressed extreme unhappiness over the incidents on the day of the immersion and said during his eight-year tenure he had faced a lot of humiliation because of such rowdy revellers.

"I had offered to resign from the committee but the president stopped me, but I will surely call a meeting soon to discuss all these unruly and indecent behaviour of the participants who are hell-bent on lowering the sanctity of the Puja," Deb said.

The secretary of the All Puja Co-ordination Committee, Kalyan Purkayastha, said: "We confer awards to organisers for best idols, best environment, best songs played in the pandals, best theme Puja, best procession and so on. But we will have to think more seriously to stop all this vulgarity during the Puja," Purkayastha said.
