Tura, March 25: The Garo Students Union (GSU) has sought a magisterial probe into an incident involving the sub-inspector of Rongram police station in West Garo Hills, who had assaulted a transport corporation bus driver on Tuesday, while the bus was en route to Shillong from Tura.
The high-handedness of the police officer led to a traffic jam for over an hour, causing much inconvenience to the passengers of several buses, which were on their way to Guwahati and Shillong.
The sub-inspector reportedly had no reason to assault the driver and had arbitrarily manhandled the elderly driver, who was injured.
The passengers were agitated by the sub-inspector's move and stopped him from further hurting the driver.
In the melee, unidentified miscreants torched a police vehicle (Maruti Gypsy) parked at Goeragre locality, on the outskirts of Tura, where the incident took place.
In a letter to West Garo Hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi, additional secretary of GSU Balrang Momin said, "Nobody is above the law and no one can take the law into their hands. Police cannot assault a person for no reason. We condemn the assault on the bus driver by the policeman and demand immediate action against the culprit (sub-inspector) and a magisterial inquiry into the incident."
