Sivasagar, Jan. 10: The sixth edition of Assam Football Association’s Assam State Premier League Football tournament is being organised here from the third week of February.
Members of the Sivasagar District Sports Association said the league is one of the major events to be held in the Upper Assam district during the yearlong golden jubilee celebrations of the association. “The top 10 teams of Assam will vie for the honours and 20 matches will be held during the championship,” a member of the sports association said.
They said Public Health Recreational Club (Silchar), Assam Rifles (Tezpur), Assam Police Blues, Gauhati Town Club, Green Valley SC, Sunrise Athletic Club, NF Railway SC and Assam State Electricity Board SC of Guwahati, Moran Town Club (Charaideo) and Oil India FC (Duliajan) will take part in the league.
“We have planned to host several major sporting events during the golden jubilee celebrations of the association. The celebrations will kick off on February 8 with a mass rally, which has been organised with an objective of attracting young talent to the sporting field,” said Sarat Hazarika, the secretary of the golden jubilee celebrations committee. The association will observe February 8 as Sports Awareness Day and expects a turnout of 10,000 people at the rally. Speaking on the occasion, the president of Sivasagar District Sports Association, Anjan Dutta, said several prominent past and present sportspersons of the state would be felicitated during the golden jubilee celebrations. “Besides the major sporting events, we are also planning to organise a sports seminar in March,” he said.
The secretary of the association, Pranabjit Chaliha, recalled the contributions and sacrifice made by the sportsmen and organisers for the uplift of sports in the district and sought public support for the successful celebration of the golden jubilee.
An organising committee has been formed with Arjuna awardee Bhogeswar Baruah as the president and Manoj Bhagawati as vice-president.
The association has prepared a budget of Rs 2.5 crore to develop sports infrastructure in the district this year.
