Shillong, April 4: Meghalaya, which owes hundreds of crores of rupees to the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (Neepco), has reason to feel relieved as the central government company has conveyed its decision not to stop power supply to the state.

"We have received feedback that Neepco will not regulate power supply to Meghalaya though the state is yet to clear all pending dues," an official told this correspondent here today.

Earlier, it was reported that Neepco had served a notice to Meghalaya asking it to pay pending dues worth over Rs 450 crore, failing which supply of power would be regulated from tomorrow.

The official said Meghalaya had only paid Rs 90 crore to Neepco.

Sources said Neepco's long wait to recover its dues from the states in the Northeast, including Meghalaya, had run out for want of finance to sustain itself.

Despite a number of assurances made in the past and intervention by the Meghalaya government, the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL) could not pay pending power dues to Neepco.

The MeECL is also struggling to pay outstanding dues piling up with various power companies for purchase of electricity, sources added.
