Peril lies in plastic tea cups: Study

Research has revealed that a plastic glass releases harmful chemicals when extremely warm liquid like water, tea or coffee is poured into it.

Dhubri, Jan. 25: Research has revealed that a plastic glass releases harmful chemicals when extremely warm liquid like water, tea or coffee is poured into it.

NE Janata Assurance, an NGO which engaged doctors and chemists to get it researched a few months ago, has demanded that the government ban plastic glasses in tea stalls and restaurants in the district.

A doctor engaged in the study said they detected the presence of bisphenol A that could cause diseases and disorders in human intestines, liver and other organs.

Secretary of the NGO, Kamal Adhikari, said scientists and chemical experts were already familiar with the fact.When contacted, Dhubri district surveillance officer of Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme Joydeep Bhattacharjee confirmed the presence of bisphenol in plastic disposable glasses widely used in tea stalls across Assam.
