March 22: The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council will start probing the circumstances leading to the damage of answerscripts in the B. Borooah College fire on March 3 after Holi.

Sources in the council said former education department official S. Bharali will conduct the probe after Holi and submit his report by March 31.

The probe has become imperative because more than the college, it is the council which has been facing flak. Either the candidates or their parents feel the council has not been doing enough to make colleges and schools toe its orders.

?As you know we had decided to conduct the probe after the incident. We could not proceed because the principal of the college was out of station for sometime. Now that she is back, we will start the probe after Holi and it will not take more than a couple of days to find out what went wrong,? the source said.

Another source said though nothing much must be expected of the probe, it will be conducted nevertheless to send a message to the institutions that they need to fall in line or face the music.

According to the special examination schedule announced by the council, Higher Secondary final year students will have to sit for the history and chemistry papers on March 30, biology/business organisation and commercial practice on April 2, geography on April 4, advance languages/Sanskrit on April 6, physics on April 7, political science on April 8, book-keeping and accountancy on April 9, mathematics on April 11 and education on April 12.
