Karbi Anglong toll rises

Unidentified assailants killed one Kettching Hasamsa at Deramukh village under Baithalangsu police station in Karbi Anglong around 1.30 pm on Wednesday. Hasamsa, an inmate of a relief camp, had gone to his village on Tuesday to bring paddy when two persons shot him. In another incident late Tuesday night, two shops were set on fire by miscreants at Kolongapar under the same police station.

Speaker quits

Manipur Speaker T.N. Haokip put in his resignation papers to Governor S.S. Sidhu on Wednesday, paving the way for a reshuffle in the Okram Ibobi Singh ministry. Moirangthem Nara Singh has been appointed pro tem speaker.

New dioceses

Pope Benedict XVI has created two new Catholic dioceses in Arunachal Pradesh ? one in Itanagar and the other in Miao in Changlang district.

Asom Sena

The All Assam Students? Union and the Asom Unnati Sabha will jointly float the Asom Sena on Thursday at a joint convention at the Barpeta District Library field.

Report review

The Centre is examining the Justice (retd) B.P. Jeevan Reddy Committee?s review report of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

Fire tragedy

Seven persons, including a 10-month-old infant, were burnt to death on Wednesday in a timber house, suspected to have been containing inflammable articles, in Phek town of Nagaland.

Murder arrests

Four persons have been arrested by Golaghat police on charges of murdering one Lanka Kishan on December 2. The body of the deceased has not been recovered.

Family pension

The Assam government has allowed family pension to state government employees who have been absorbed in state PSUs.

ONGC scheme

The ONGC has distributed Rs 3.03 lakh to several social and sports organisations in Sivasagar district under its Corporate Citizenship Policy.
