Shillong, July 10: The Meghalaya government has decided to repeal an existing cooperative society act which it had adopted from Assam.
The government has proposed a new legislation known as Meghalaya Cooperative Society Bill, 2015.
Minister for cooperation department H.D.R. Lyngdoh today said that the proposal to repeal the act was discussed and decided in the cabinet meeting.
The new legislation would be placed in the Assembly when it is in session, he said.
All these years, the state has been referring to the Meghalaya Cooperative Society Act (Assam Act of 1950).
The state government has also discussed the draft proposal on Centre--state relations and a decision was taken to send its views to the Centre on a number of issues concerning the state.
Parliamentary affairs minister Prestone Tynsong said the issue on settlement of migrant population in scheduled areas of the state and the need to adopt some changes in the electoral process to safeguard the identity of the tribal people were also discussed.
