Sanbor Shullai (top) and Manas Chaudhuri |
Shillong, Dec. 16: The ruling Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) has claimed to have worked out a compromise formula to tackle the face-off between education minister Manas Chaudhuri and Deputy Speaker Sanbor Shullai over the assault episode at a marriage reception recently.
Though the MPA leaders, the chairman of state planning board P.A. Sangma and chief minister Donkupar Roy refused to reveal the compromise formula, a meeting between Shullai and Chaudhuri in the presence of a senior minister of the MPA is in the scheme of things.
Sangma and Roy had a closed-door meeting yesterday and wanted both Shullai and Chaudhuri “to forget and forgive” and thereby put an end to the chapter.
Sangma, who met Chaudhuri at his official residence, apologised on behalf of his party legislator Shullai.
However, Chaudhuri conveyed to Sangma that he was ready to forgive, if Shullai apologises over the assault at Shillong Club. Prior to this, the chief minister had also met the education minister and wanted to find an amicable solution to the issue.
The chief minister said the matter would be resolved and the MPA wanted both the leaders to patch up their differences.
Shullai said if the MPA leaders call a meeting to sort out their differences, he was ready to attend it along with Chaudhuri.
“We are in the MPA and the meeting should be initiated by MPA leaders to sort out the matter,” he said, adding that he expected a reciprocal apology from Chaudhuri to reach an amicable solution.
NCP president W.R. Kharlukhi hoped the MPA co-ordination committee would meet soon to sort out the issue.
The MPA spokesman and urban affairs minister Paul Lyngdoh said the meeting between Shullai and Chaudhuri would be initiated by minister Conrad Sangma.
