Aizawl: The Mizo Zirlawi Pawl (Mizo students' association) on Wednesday lodged a complaint with Kawnpui police against six Chakma families allegedly residing illegally in an area under Hortoki village council in Kolasib district in Mizoram.
The union urged the police to drive out the illegal settlers.
In the FIR, the MZP said the six Chakma families who came from neighbouring Assam were illegally residing in makeshift huts at Hrangakai Suar and Rawthla Li Zawn in Hortoki under Kawnpui police station.
The FIR said the illegal settlers were carrying out jhum and broom farming.
Young Mizo Association (YMA) volunteers had earlier served an eviction order and told the six Chakma families to leave Mizoram, the FIR said.
The MZP alleged that the illegal settlers were exploiting the natural resource of the state. It also claimed that some of the settlers possessed unlicensed guns, which were confiscated by YMA volunteers.
"The student body had thought of using force to push back the illegal settlers to their native state. But apprehending that the move might turn violent, we registered a complaint so that the law enforcement agency can take necessary measures to evict them," the FIR said.
MZP general secretary Lalnunmawia Pautu said the six Chakma families migrated from Baichora in Assam and settled down near the Tlawng river along the state's boundary with Assam. "Initially they were hired by local farmers to look after their farms. But the illegal migrants decided to permanently settle down there later," he added.
He said the MZP, YMA and the village council had earlier served an eviction order to the families, asking them to leave Mizoram before the end of this month. He said the union would make all possible efforts to push back the illegal settlers till the Mizoram government takes remedial measures.
