
Guwahati: Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday announced that a park will be set up in memory of Quit India Movement martyr Kushal Konwar.
Speaking at a tribute programme on the 75th death anniversary of Konwar at Sarupathar in Golaghat district, Sonowal said the memorial park will be set up at Padumoni in Sarupathar.
Konwar, who hailed from Balijan near Sarupathar in Golaghat district, was hanged by the British on June 15, 1943, in Jorhat jail after being accused as the chief conspirator of a train sabotage near Sarupathar in October 1942.
The chief minister urged the youth to follow the ideals of great freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the cause of Independence and work with dedication and commitment to build a better and stronger India.
The programme was organised by the Dhanshiri subdivisional administration in association with All Assam Freedom Fighters' Association.
Agriculture minister Atul Bora, Jorhat MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, MLAs Roselina Tirkey and Mrinal Saikia, former minister Binod Goala, Golaghat deputy commissioner Gaurav Bothra, president of All Assam Freedom Fighters Association Krishna Lahkar and Konwar's family members, among others, were present.
The Kamrup (metro) district administration also paid tribute to Konwar with a programme near his statue at Nehru Park here. Education minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya attended the event.
Governor Jagdish Mukhi on Friday released a book, Kushal Konwar, written by Bhupendra Kumar Goswami, at a function at Bani Kanta Kakoti hall in Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra here.
