Shillong, Nov. 22: The Meghalaya government today garnered the support of most political parties for a campaign against the move to reorganise constituencies before the Assembly elections.

An all-party meeting expressed concern over the “haste” in undertaking delimitation of constituencies. Representatives of most parties were of the view that undertaking such an important exercise a couple of months prior to elections would be inappropriate.

The Kuldip Singh Commission has recommended reorganisation of constituencies, based on population, in each state.

Except for the Meghalaya Democratic Party, the Peoples’ Democratic Movement and the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement, leaders of all parties attended the meeting.

Another meeting will be held tomorrow to decide how to go about presenting Meghalaya’s case before the Election Commission. Khonglam indicated that a “letter of appeal” would be sent to the Election Commission, requesting it to postpone the process of delimiting constituencies.

“We will try to make the Election Commission see reason. Delimitation of constituencies can be before the parliamentary elections,” the chief minister said.
