Kokrajhar, June 30: An Adivasi woman was allegedly gangraped by three army jawans at Padmapukri under Gossaigaon police station in the district last night.

The jawans of the 11th Jammu and Kashmir light infantry regiment, stationed at Habrubil in Gossaigaon, allegedly raped the pregnant woman at gunpoint inside her house in the presence of her husband.

Gossaigaon sub-divisional police officer S.R. Mili said the jawans, who were here to receive several colleagues returning from leave, allegedly crossed over to the village adjoining the railway station and committed the crime.

The victim was today treated for minor injuries at the Gossaigaon Civil Hospital. A case (number 92/2004) under Sections 448, 342 and 376 has been registered by the police.

Mili said the army was co-operating with the investigation and had promised that it would find out who the culprits were and hand them over to the police.

An army official, based in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), said, “We have taken cognisance of the allegation and a high-level inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the truth.”

The people of the area have started demonstrating against the crime.

Bodon Hasda, executive magistrate of the BTC and president of the Adivashi Sewa Samiti, condemned the “heinous act” and demanded an immediate judicial inquiry.
