Guwahati, Feb. 13: Assam Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami today barred senior additional advocate general, Devajit Saikia, from attending the Assembly session for the next two weeks for uploading a photograph of himself and two others inside the House on Facebook on February 7.

The Speaker also referred the matter to the Committee of the Privileges, which has been asked to submit its report within two weeks.

The move followed after Hafiz Basir Ahmed Qasimi and seven other AIUDF legislators submitted a petition to the Speaker on Saturday, seeking action against Saikia who had uploaded a photograph on Facebook that was clicked in the Speaker's gallery during the budget session.

"The petitioners requested me to take action against the accused in the light of my recent ruling in a similar matter. After careful consideration of the petition, I, under rule 176 of Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Assam Legislative Assembly, refer the matter in question to the Committee of Privileges for examination and report. Till action on the report is taken, Saikia is advised not to attend the Assembly proceedings," the order issued by the Speaker said today.

Saikia, however, declined to comment on the matter as a probe was under way.

AIUDF legislator Aminul Islam was suspended from the Assembly by the Speaker for three days for live streaming of the Assembly proceedings on Facebook.

The legislator went live on the social networking site on February 3.

The action was taken after parliamentary affairs minister Chandra Mohan Patowary drew the Speaker's attention to the incident.

Photographs of chief minister's press adviser Rishikesh Goswami and young BJP leader Aparajita Bhuyan were also seen, along with Saikia, on the Facebook page.

Following the two incidents, the Speaker yesterday issued an order prohibiting cell phones inside the Assembly.
