Hailakandi: Altogether 14 public grievances were solved on the spot at the first public grievances redressal day held by the Hailakandi district administration at the deputy commissioner's office here on Tuesday.

These related to issues such as water supply, road connectivity, demarcation of lands, disbursement of pensions and appointments under compassionate ground.

Sources said deputy commissioner Adil Khan listened to people's woes and instructed district officials and heads of departments to address the grievances within a specific time frame.

The initiative will be repeated every Tuesday.

The sources said there was an overwhelming response to the initiative and the petitioners were satisfied after their problems were solved.

People, who assembled at the DC's office since 9.30am to register their complaints, said the initiative will result in speedy disposal of cases.

"I am elated that the new deputy commissioner has kept a day for us. We hope to see fruitful results," said Fakhrul Ali Laskar, a petitioner.

Aminul Islam, who accompanied an elderly petitioner, said, "Earlier we had to run from pillar to post to get our complaints looked into, leave alone solving it. We are expecting things to change for the better thanks to the initiative by the deputy commissioner."

Dipak Kundu, a retired employee, said earlier people sometimes had to go back disappointed after they failed to meet the deputy commissioner and other officers. "The long wait is over," he added.

Assistant commissioner Parikshit Phukan, who is manning the public grievance cell in the DC's establishment, said, "The applicants can now discuss their grievances face-to-face with the deputy commissioner and other officials. For us it is an opportunity to address issues raised by public and instil confidence in them."

District development commissioner-cum-in-charge of the cell, F.R. Laskar, additional deputy commissioner Ruth Lienthang, the chief executive officer of Hailakandi zilla parishad, S. Singh, circle officers of Lala, Hailakandi and Algapur besides district heads and officials of the departments were present.
