Jorhat, Feb. 27: A day after the12th Northeast Marwari Sammelan hinted at the community taking part in active politics in Assam, chief minister Tarun Gogoi today said the Congress would try to include candidates from the Marwari community in the next elections.

Assam has over 6 lakh Marwari population, most of who have come here to do business and settled in Assam since several generations.

The chief minister, while attending the concluding day?s function of the triennial meet here, assured the Marwari community full security saying the community had contributed not only to the economy but also to art and culture and were part and parcel of Assamese society.

The outgoing president of the sammelan, Onkarmal Agarwalla, yesterday said the Marwaris have to take active part in Assam politics to remove the ?feeling of insecurity? in the land they have made their home.

?First we were known as Lakshmiputra and then as Saraswatiputra. Now, it is the turn to become Durgaputra, but not by taking the trishul but by wielding power through politics,? Agarwalla said while addressing the gathering on the second day of the meet here. The meet was held for the first time in Jorhat.

Agarwalla said though the Marwari community has been contributing for the socio-economic development of Assam more than any other community in the state, Marwaris are often treated as second-class citizens and looked upon as if they have come here to loot the people of Assam.

?Taking part in active politics can only make our stand clear that the Marwaris are very much a part of Assam,? he said.

Stating that Marwaris could give clean governance if they take part in Assam politics, Agarwalla said the community had provided 20 municipal chairmen and a couple of MLAs who had performed their duties competently.

Speaking as the chief guest, the newly-elected president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, Kanak Sen Deka, said Assam needed politicians who would not work for their self interest but for the welfare of society as a whole.

?It is not the farmers, educationists or businessmen who have let Assam down but the current lot of politicians who lacked social responsibility,? Deka said.
