Nagaon, May 29: The Congress’s strength in the 11th Dima Hasao Autonomous Council went up to 19 as four more elected members of three rival factions today stated in black and white their unconditional support to the party.

The four newcomers include two from Dilip Nunisa-led Dima Hasao Dal — Amendu Hojai and Biswajit Daulogupu — Joel faction’s Debojit Bathari and Indegenous Peoples Party’s Jhuing Pame.

Hojai and Daulogupu have been elected from Harangajao and Wajao constituencies respectively while Debojit Bathari from Hadingma and Jhuing Pame from Kuki-dominated Hangrum constituency.

Chief executive member Debojeet Thaosen today told reporters that all the four today submitted separate letters addressed to him expressing their willingness to give unconditional support to the Congress in forming the council.

“We accepted their proposals and assured them that they would be taken into confidence in forming the next Congress council. Their formal joining may take some time as it depends on the decision of Assam PCC chief Bhubaneswar Kalita,” Thaosen said.

After the May 24 counting, the Congress emerged as the single largest party with 10 elected members but was short of majority in the 28-member council.

Two days after the announcement of results, five dissident party leaders joined the Congress and that increased the party strength to 15. Today’s arrival of four more would enable the party to form an independent house.

“Joel faction’s Debulal Gorlosa, who has been elected from two constituencies — Dehangi and Hamri — might have to forego one. In both the constituencies, our Congress candidates are in the second position and in such cases instead of going for re-election according to council law, the candidate in the second position will be announced as elected. In that situation our strength will go automatically up to 20,” said a Dima Hasao Congress committee source.

Debulal Gorlosa had announced that he would join the Congress soon after the oath-taking ceremony.

“He might or might not come. PCC chief Bhubaneswar Kalita will take the decision. If we are instructed to take him by the state-level authority, we will do that,” the party source said.

The date scheduled for oath-taking is June 3, followed by the nomination of the chairman, selection of the chief executive member and formation of a full-fledged body.

A high-level party source today said candidate for the chairman of the 11th Dima Hasao Autonomous Council is yet to be finalised. However, the party has already decided to give Debojeet Thaosen a second consecutive term as chief executive member.
