Kokrajhar, July 8: Flash floods have inundated several villages and affected thousands of people under Sidli circle in Chirang district after incessant rain and a rise in the water level of the Aie and Champamoti rivers.

Sources in the district administration said around 3,000 people in around 10 villages have been affected.

In villages like No. 1 Dababil, Naturbari, Madarpur, Koirabari, Debarbil and Khanibhur, at least 2,615 people were affected after the rise in the water level of the Aie and its tributaries. The administration has set up two relief camps at Debarbil and Khanibhur Lower Primary Schools.

Fifty-five people have taken shelter in the camps, sources said.

The Aie is reported to be flowing above the danger level and has flooded Majrabari village under Bijni subdivision in Chirang district.

The rise in the water levels is attributed to heavy rainfall in Bhutan from where these rivers originate.

Sources also said an embankment has been breached at Nilibari village.

A senior official from the district administration said relief materials, including rice, dal and salt are being distributed to the affected people.

Medical teams were rushed to the flood-affected areas.

The district administration has also restricted movement of the public and the collection of sand, boulders and gravel from quarries along these two rivers.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority had cautioned the Chirang district administration about the possibility of heavy rain and the rise in water levels.

The disaster management authority has informed the district administration about the possibility of heavy rainfall.
