Visiting Congress members claim the situation is under control, but accuse the Centre of not providing funds to control erosion. AGP and BJP leaders flay the ruling Congress for allegedly overlooking the imminent danger to Nagaon and Morigaon from the Brahmaputra.

Junior engineer Krishna Hazarika, who is supervising the Rs 2-crore temporary anti-erosion project that began on March 31, said such fears were unfounded. “We have been able to divert the current and induce siltation by using RCC porcupines and bamboo cleaves. The entire 3.8-km stretch has been covered. Over 150 contractors and 500 workers have been engaged in this project. As you see, we have our camps here to monitor the scene round the clock. Technically, our embankment is very sound. There is no threat at all.”
