Guwahati, Feb. 19: BJP legislator from Morigaon, Rama Kanta Dewri, today said he will give up his political career if someone could prove he is the man in a viral video clip showing a couple in a compromising position.

Dewri claimed there was a conspiracy to destroy his political career and said he had filed an FIR in Morigaon police station today.

"I am ashamed of the recent allegations against me. The news item saying I was in the video is false. I have been told the physique of the person in the video does not even resemble mine. If anyone can prove that the man in the video is me, I will give up my political career immediately," Dewri told reporters at Guwahati Press Club here.

A section of local media had claimed the man in the video was Dewri.

The video clip showing the couple reportedly in a Guwahati hotel has gone viral in Morigaon, Dewri's constituency, causing him much embarrassment. Two hours after the news conference at Guwahati Press Club, he rushed to Dispur Press Club to address reporters again.

"At this moment I will not name who is behind the conspiracy. Some of my political rivals may have been behind this. I will reveal the name of the miscreant after the report arrives from the forensic laboratory," Dewri said. He demanded examination of the video in a forensic laboratory.

"I request everyone not to believe lies being spread against me. There are many people who are trying to destroy my political career," Dewri said.

"Before forging an alliance, the BJP had promised that there will be representatives from every community in the cabinet. As I have led the Tiwa community for many years, I am a strong contender for a cabinet berth. That is why my rivals have conspired to deprive me," he said.

After Dewri's news conferences, the Opposition Congress latched on to the issue seeking his expulsion from the BJP. The Tiwa Students' Union also came out saying that as many as 34 cases are pending against Dewri.

This is the second time that an Assam legislator's name has been involved in a viral video. A few years ago, a video purportedly showing Congress MLA Rumi Nath nude had gone viral.
