Kokrajhar/Guwahati, Oct. 8: Reviving memories of the “secret killings” in which the kin of Ulfa militants were targeted, unidentified persons today fired at the car of Anjali Daimari, a human rights activist and sister of NDFB chief Ranjan Daimary.

She, however, survived the apparent attempt on her life.

The incident took place at Barama in Baksa district this afternoon when Anjali was returning from Barama College where she is a lecturer.

Anjali told The Telegraph over phone that after she came out of the college around 1.30pm in her Hyundai Getz car along with two other colleagues, two youths stopped the car and asked her in Bodo to come out of the vehicle to discuss something important.

She said the youths, clad in raincoats, were waiting at the gate of the college astride a bike.

Sensing danger, Anjali refused to come out of the car and asked the driver to speed away. As the car whizzed past, the youths fired a few shots, but missed the vehicle.

Anjali then went straight to Nalbari police station to file a complaint.

Since the place where the incident occured was under Barama police station, an FIR was later registered there.

Police said the incident was being investigated.

“An FIR has been lodged by her and we are invest- igating the matter. We can- not give much details now,” said a senior police official at Barama police station.

The police said that though a mark was spotted on the vehicle, it was not clear whether it was caused by a bullet. The Barama College authority has also lodged a separate FIR at the police station.

The Boro Women Justice Forum, of which Anjali is president, strongly condemned the incident and demanded that the perpetrators of the crime be brought to book immediately.

In the late nineties, unidentified gunmen killed several family members of Ulfa leaders and cadres.

These incidents had triggered a furore in the state and are said to be the principle cause for the downfall of the AGP government.
