Guwahati, March 11: Western Assam will get its first four-star hotel with the Gurgaon-headquartered Cygnett Hotels and Resorts starting operations at Bongaigaon town from Tuesday.

The 50-room Cygnett Park Meghna is at Chapaguri Part-2, along 31 C National Highway, in Chirang district, bordering the northern part of Bongaigaon town.

Western Assam comprises of four districts - Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Chirang and Barpeta. The local partner is Meghna.

Cygnett Hotels and Resorts managing director Sarbendra Sarkar told The Telegraph that places like Bongaigaon, the trade hub of western Assam, lacked a good hotel. Hence, this place was chosen.

The Park brand is mid-segment and has all the facilities like a swimming pool, spa and other amenities.

Bongaigaon has a IOC refinery, a NTPC power project and gets tourists from Bhutan.

The company said this would be the only branded hotel in the area which would fulfil the needs of both business and leisure travellers.

This business hotel, with 50 well-appointed rooms and suites, will have a restaurant, bar, large indoor and outdoor banquet space, business facilities, a fitness centre, modern wellness facilities and a swimming pool.

Bongaigaon is the second largest town of lower Assam after Guwahati. It is one of the biggest commercial and industrial hubs of Northeast.

"Our hotel in Guwahati - Cygnett Inn Repose - is doing good with 75 to 80 per cent occupancy," he said. The company has 12 hotels at present.

According to Dr Itesh Bordoloi, a paediatrician who is the partner of the hotel, there was a need for good quality and standard hotels in Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Kokrajhar and Chirang districts.

"High-profile officials working in banks, automobile companies, pharma companies, government projects, Bongaigaon refinery, NTPC Kokrajhar district and neighbouring Bhutan choose to stay in Bongaigaon," Bordoloi said.

Rubul Hazarika, a franchisee of a telecom operator, said because of lack of quality hotels, corporate executives do not visit Bongaigaon and other lower Assam districts. "The hotel would be an encouragement to the corporate sector to visit Bongaigaon" he added.
