Golaghat, Oct. 6: Maoist leader Aditya Bora, who was arrested last week, had floated the Revolutionary Peoples Group (RPG) to get training from the NSCN (Isak-Muivah), police said today.
Police sources said the NSCN (I-M) had refused to give training to Maoists. Hence Bora tried to get training for Maoist cadres operating in Upper Assam under the cover of RPG.
Bora, 41, the founder of Upper Assam Leading Committee (one of the three Maoist organisations in Assam), was arrested from Khakandaguri area under Dergaon police station in Golaghat district by a police team, led by additional superintendent of police Numal Mahatta, on October 1. Borah's associates Uttam Hazarika, 25, and Binanda Bora, 21, were arrested along with him.
Interrogation of the trio has revealed that Bora was also the key liaison person between Maoists and the Peoples Liberation Army of Manipur and would sent Maoist cadres for training to Manipur and Nagaland, the sources said.
"After Bora's arrest, rhino poacher Dulal Pegu and Moina Dohutia of Bor Mesai village in Tinsukia district are leading the outfit. We suspect Pegu used to trade rhino horns to procure arms and ammunition for the Maoists," one of the sources said.
Mahatta said Pegu had formed the Karbi Anglong Simantoborti Anchalik Samity (Maoists) and was looking after its activities in the areas bordering Karbi Anglong district.
According to the sources, Upper Assam districts are becoming a hotbed of Maoist activities. While arms training of its cadres takes place mostly outside Assam, political training is imparted to them in Upper Assam itself.
Since his arrest, Bora has been grilled by several security agencies of the state. Sources said a National Investigation Agency (NIA) team is likely to visit Golaghat to question him.
Maoists have three committees in the state - Upper Assam Leading Committee, Lower Assam Leading Committee and Barak Valley Leading Committee. All these committees work under Eastern Regional Bureau, an umbrella organisation of the Maoists headed by Bora.
Maoist activity in Golaghat first came to light when NIA sleuths arrested former secretary-general of Manab Adhikar Sangram Samity, Pallab Borbora, on June 3, 2012, for his alleged links with the red rebels.
On January 18, 2013, Aditya Saikia, president (in-charge) of Assam Student Youth Organisation was arrested for allegedly spreading Maoist propaganda.
On June 12 that year, Monjit Bora and Sangita Barua, two suspected Maoist cadres, were arrested in Golaghat district.
On November 11, 2014, Simanta Hazarika alias Lachit Hazarika was arrested from his residence at Natungaon Guijan in Dergaon for his alleged links with Maoists.
In February this year, Golaghat police arrested four persons - Nirmal Tirki alias David Tirki, 42, Padmeswar Ghatowal, 38, Bupai Ghatowar, 40, and Sanjay Singh alias Ram Singh, 36 - for allegedly recruiting youths for Maoist activities and sending them to Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand for training.
Three of the four arrested belonged to the All Adivasi National Liberation Army, including its founder and commander-in-chief, Nirmal, and district commandant, Padmeswar.
