Shillong, Nov. 3: Meghalaya police today refuted allegations that non-indigenous candidates were recruited in large numbers to fill up posts in the newly-constituted 6th Meghalaya Police Battalion or the India Reserve Battalion, and claimed that the recruitment was done according to the existing state reservation policy.

There were reports that the state reservation policy was dishonoured as a large chunk of non-indigenous candidates were allegedly appointed as constables in the battalion.

However, director-general of police N. Ramachandran rebutted the reports and said the recruitment was done in full accordance with the reservation policy.

“The results of the recruitment tests recently published for recruitment to the posts of constables and followers in the 6th Meghalaya Police Battalion as well as to fill up vacancies in the other three Indian Reserve Battalions — 3rd, 4th and 5th — have been meticulously done by strictly adhering to the existing state reservation policy of 15 per cent for open category, 40 per cent for Khasis, 40 per cent for Garos, and five per cent for other tribes,” Ramachandran said.

He said the results were declared for the 886 vacant posts of constables for both men and women, and 84 vacant posts of male candidates in these battalions. Ramachandran said the successful candidates we-re selected in order of merit.

With reference to the 886 vacant posts of constables, 134 belonged to the open category, 354 to the Khasi category, 354 to the Garo category while 44 belonged to the other tribes category, the director-general of police said.

He said of the 134 successful candidates in the open category, 38 were Khasis, 10 Garos while 13 belonged to other tribes.

As far as the 84 men were concerned, Ramachandran said 12 were from the open category, 34 from the Khasi category, 34 in the Garo category while four belonged to other tribes.

He said of the 12 in the open category, there were three Khasis, two Garos and one belonged to another tribe.

Last week, hundreds of applicants had marched to the state secretariat demanding declaration of the results.
