Imphal, Feb. 26: Manipur Police Sports Club lifted the 20th Governor’s Cup Polo Tournament trophy, defeating a defiant Khurai Polo Club (B) team by 9-6 goals in the final at Imphal Pologround today.
High on morale with two earlier championship title wins — Hazari Polo and 57th Mountain Division Trophy — under their belt, Manipur Police rode in hard and despite a good fightback by their opponents, the policemen had little difficulty in taming the Khurai team in the final today.
M. Jawan led the Police attack and single-handedly turned the game in his team’s favour by scoring five goals, while teammates S. Somorjit pumped in three goals and T. Pradeep fired in one.
For the Khurai team, L. Thompson and Th. Mocha picked up three goals each. But their valiant efforts proved to be futile before the police onslaught.
The Police team was awarded Rs 10,000 while the Khurai side received Rs 7,000 along with their respective trophies.
Khurai rider Th. Mocha got the Best Player prize, collecting Rs 5,000 while five ponies were adjudged the best among all with Rs 1,000 each.
Manipur Governor Gurbachan Jagat distributed the prizes today.
