Guwahati, Oct. 3: Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi was produced in a court at Kaliabor in Nagaon district this morning amid tight security and remanded in one day's police custody.

Akhil, who was arrested from Guwahati yesterday on charges of instigating people during an eviction drive in Kaziranga on September 19, was produced before Kaliabor subdivisional judicial magistrate Pranab Sarma, who remanded him in police custody. Police had sought his custody for a week.

Two persons were killed and 17 others, including police personnel, were injured when the police clashed with protesters during the eviction drive in Kaziranga.

A case was registered against Akhil at Jakhalabandha police station for allegedly instigating protesters during the eviction.

Policemen in riot gear were deployed on the court premises apprehending trouble from Akhil's supporters.

KMSS joint general secretary Bhasco De Saikia today said the eviction at Kaziranga and Akhil's arrest were a part of the government's ploy to divert the people's attention from their agitation against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, which aims to provide citizenship to Bangladeshi Hindus who were forced to flee their country following religious persecution.

"Despite Akhil's arrest, our agitation against the bill will continue," Saikia said.

Assam PCC president Ripun Bora refused to comment on Akhil Gogoi's arrest since he is yet to go through the charges against the peasant leader.
