Agartala, Oct. 27: With the crucial elections to the Agartala Municipal Council (AMC) and 12 nagar panchayats slated for December, the Tripura Congress is in a spot over Prime Minister Manmohan Singh?s scheduled visit to the state on Saturday.
In the course of his daylong visit, the Prime Minister will inaugurate a thermal power project of ONGC and lay the foundation stone of the Agartala Medical College. The state Congress leadership is apprehensive about the likely contents of Singh?s speech on the twin occasions.
?In case the Prime Minister showers praises on the Left Front, we will be hardpressed to justify even our legitimate charges against the government,? said PCC vice-president Tapas De.
He said PCC president Samir Ranjan Barman had earlier addressed a letter to AICC president Sonia Gandhi, requesting her to postpone the Prime Minister?s visit till the end of the municipal polls.
The visit had been finalised by October 18 but the AICC confirmed it only on October 25. Yesterday, the PCC decided to call upon party workers and supporters to participate in the programmes without the party flag, banner or festoons.
PCC spokesman Ratan Chakraborty said the PCC had condemned the manner in which the state CPM was trying to gain political mileage from the programme.
After the meeting, a delegation of the PCC led by Samir Ranjan Barman and leader of the Opposition Ratanlal Nath met chief secretary R.K. Mathur and told him to ensure that the CPM does not manipulate Singh?s visit for sectarian gains.
?We have told the chief secretary that since Congress workers and supporters will not carry flags, the CPM cadre must not be allowed to do so,? Nath said.
He however disagreed that Singh?s visit would affect Congress prospects in the upcoming polls. ?He is the Prime Minister of India and not of the Congress alone, his visit will not tell upon our chances in the elections,? Nath said.
