Haflong, Feb. 14: The secretary of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, Mukut Kemprai, today fixed Tuesday as the day for electing a new chief executive member.
Sources said the development has caused confusion and resentment among many in Dima Hasao district after Congress candidate Debojeet Thaosen was elected unopposed as the CEM during the council session yesterday.
While Kemprai was not available for comment, sources said governor P.B. Acharya yesterday wrote a letter to the secretary directing that the election of the new CEM and executive committee of the council be taken up in accordance with the provision under Rule 20 as provided in Rule 21 (1) (2) of the Assam Autonomous Districts (constitution of district councils) Rules, 1951 (as amended).
"In view of the governor's letter, Kemprai has fixed Tuesday as the day of election. Filing of nomination will be done tomorrow," a source said.
The BJP recently conceded defeat even before passing of the no-confidence motion against the former chief executive member Niranjan Hojai. He resigned from his post on February 10. The BJP had wrested control of the council from the Congress on October 24 last year.
