Shillong, April 7: The chargesheet for alleged irregularities in the functioning of the now-dissolved Chandra Mohan Jha (CMJ) University will be ready by this month for submission in court.
"The investigation is complete and the chargesheet almost ready for submission in the court of the chief judicial magistrate (CJM) here. We expect to submit the chargesheet within this month," a source said today.
Nearly 11 accused are likely to be named in the chargesheet, the source said, refusing to disclose their names.
"Many witnesses from different parts of the country were examined by the investigation team. Around 11 people will be named as accused in the case," the source said.
During the course of the investigation, the source said, CID sleuths had seized around two trucks of documents relating to the private university. These documents include more than 4,000 PhD theses, the source added.
Nearly two years have elapsed ever since the CMJ University hit the headlines after then Meghalaya governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary, who was also visitor of the private university, brought to light the alleged irregularities in the functioning of the university.
Mooshahary had alleged that there were several anomalies in the functioning of the private university. He cited "mismanagement, maladministration, indiscipline and failure" in accomplishing the objectives of the university.
The university, which was established through an act passed in the state legislature in 2009, had allegedly awarded PhD degrees to 434 students and enrolled 490 students for the PhD programme during 2012-2013.
An FIR was also lodged against the university on April 26, 2013. Following the complaint, a police case was registered with the CID police station (case No. 2 (4) 2013 under Sections 420/406/466 of the IPC).
Chandra Mohan Jha, the university's chancellor, was arrested in Bihar during the Lok Sabha polls in April last year, but was granted bail by Meghalaya High Court in June 2014. The Meghalaya government had approved ex post facto dissolution of the CMJ University.
