Guwahati, March 20: CBI today arrested a senior officer of Border Roads Task Force (BRTF) from Guwahati railway station on charges of accepting a bribe.

According to a CBI source, an “unaccounted for amount” of Rs 15,03,000 in cash was recovered from the accused, who has been identified as Ram Milan, 48, the commander of 763 BRTF unit based at Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.

“The accused was apprehended by a team of CBI officials soon after he boarded the Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express at Guwahati railway station this morning,” he said.

“The operation was carried out on the basis of intelligence. During the search, the money was found inside a briefcase Milan was carrying with him,” the source said.

“The money was seized since the accused could not give a reasonable explanation about the source of the money,” the source said.

“We had information that the accused was taking illegal gratifications from private contractors in exchange of giving them contracts,” he said, adding that Milan had also amassed property grossly disproportionate to his known sources of income.

“A case has been registered against him at the CBI’s anti-corruption branch (ACB), Guwahati, under relevant sections of Prevention of Corruption Act,” the source said that.

Milan, who hails from Sultanpur in UP, reached the city this morning in his official vehicle to board the train en route to his house at Noida.

“He is being questioned by senior CBI officials at its ACB office at Narengi area of the city. The medical examination of the accused was conducted at the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital,” the source added.

Milan is likely to be produced in the court of special CBI judge here tomorrow.

“The accused was under watch for some time and we were waiting for an opportune moment to apprehend him red-handed,” he said.

According to him, Milan had demanded and taken money from contractors working on the BRTF projects in Arunachal Pradesh.
