Guwahati, Jan. 2: Three of the accused in the Burdwan blast case, including Sahanur Alom, were taken to Calcutta by the NIA today.

An official source said the NIA took Sahanur and two other Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) activists - Saikhul Islam alias Abdulla and Rofikul Islam - to Calcutta on the Saraighat Express from Guwahati this afternoon.

The trio were lodged at Guwahati central jail after Assam police arrested them for their alleged links with the JMB.

They will be produced before the NIA special court in Calcutta tomorrow.

The NIA had filed a petition before the Calcutta court last month for custodial interrogation of the three JMB members in connection with its Burdwan blast case after which the court issued a warrant on December 20 for them to be produced in Calcutta tomorrow.

According to the source, the NIA had obtained a transit remand from the court of chief judicial magistrate, Kamrup (metro), here a few days ago to take them to Calcutta.

The source said the central agency, during investigation of the Burdwan blast case, had found evidence of the alleged involvement of prime accused Sahanur and the two other co-accused in the conspiracy.

'So far, they were mostly questioned by Assam police about the JMB's network and activities in the state. Now the NIA will interrogate them to unearth their role in the accidental blast in a house at Khagragarh in Burdwan on October 2 last year,' the source said.

According to a source in Assam police, Shaikhul Islam alias Abdulla was an associate of Shakil Ahmed alias Shamin, a JMB activist who died in the Burdwan blast.

The source said Ahmed used to visit Barpeta under the cover of running a garment business to motivate Muslims in the name of pan-Islamism.

'Abdulla had instructions to remain a sleeper cell, to look for potential recruits among Muslims and motivate them,' the police source said.

Saikhul and Rofikul were picked up from Barpeta district in Assam on October 9 last year while Sahanur was arrested from Larkuchi village in Nalbari district in Assam on December 5.

The source said Sahanur is believed to have been involved in raising funds, sending youths from Assam for training to madarsas in Bengal and propagating extremism on the behalf of the JMB.

Security agencies had been looking for Sahanur after his name surfaced in the call records and interrogation of the persons arrested in Bengal in connection with the Burdwan blast.

'There had been inputs about Sahanur arranging money for the JMB. Money sent to the JMB module in Burdwan from Bangladesh was routed through him. He will be interrogated by the NIA on these aspects,' the source said.

The NIA has already collected the details of Sahanur's bank transactions from Assam.
