Guwahati, June 8: An over five per cent increase over last year’s pass percentage marked Assam’s best High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination performance in a decade.
Of the 1,84,771 candidates who sat for the examination, 92,011 made the grade to take the pass percentage to a 10-year high of 49.79 per cent.
The number of students who secured first-division marks stood at 11,843, while 21,359 were placed in the second division. Over half of those who cleared the examination — 58,809, to be precise — got third division marks.
Of the 1,39,511 regular candidates, 73,918 were successful.
The Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA), said the process of releasing the results withheld for various reasons would start after a week.
The board decided not to receive any application for re-evaluation of answerscripts at its office here.
Applications for re-evaluation have to be henceforth submitted at the zonal level within 15 days from the date of publication of the results.
Among the districts, Kamrup recorded the highest success rate of 61.62 per cent, followed by Barpeta with 55.75 per cent.
The three autonomous council-administered districts of Kokrajhar, Karbi Anglong and the North Cachar Hills fared miserably, recording pass percentages of 28.79, 30.98 and 32.64 per cent.
Don Bosco High School, Guwahati, had the maximum number of students on the merit list. Six of its students found places in the top 20.
Debanga Raj Neog of Cotton Collegiate Government Higher Secondary School secured the first position with an aggregate of 560 marks.
The elated topper attributed his success to his parents, teachers and eight hours of regular study.
Son of government employee Bolin Neog and costume designer Bibha Neog, Debanga has more than a passing interest in cricket and football.
Sabiha Siddika of Balipara Higher Secondary School, Balipara, Ankita Dutta of Holy Cross School, Silchar, and Banasmita Baruah of Sankardev Sishu Niketan, Barpeta, shared the second position.
Vishal Das of Don Bosco High School, Guwahati, got the third position.
Mustofa Salim Ahmed of Dhing K.B. Higher Secondary School bagged the fourth position, Bedanta Barman of Nalbari’s Sankardev Vidya Niketan was placed fifth, Kaushik Das of Don Bosco High School, Guwahati, got the sixth position, Joydeep Paul of Silchar Collegiate School was seventh and Dibyajyoti Biswas of Central High School, Silchar, earned the eighth spot.
Nayan Jyoti Das of Railway High School, Maligaon, and Bonny Saikia of Christjyoti School, Nagaon, shared the ninth position. The tenth position went to Amrit Pritam Chetia of Don Bosco High School, Tezpur, Nipal Deka of Cotton Collegiate Higher Secondary School, Guwahati, Nabajyoti Patowary of Modern High School, Guwahati, and Kinnar Sen of Silchar Collegiate School.
Male candidates fared better than their female counterparts this year too.
Of the 97,186 male students who sat for the examination, 52,246 were successful, which improved the pass percentage to 53.75 per cent from 47.93 per cent in 2003.
The success rate of female candidates — numbering 87,585 — was 45.40 per cent, as against the 39.80 per cent recorded last year. The number of successful female candidates stood at 39,765.
