Assam girl shines in semis

Guwahati, Sept. 20: Mridusmita Phukan of Sports Authority of India North Eastern Regional Sub-Centre, Guwahati, has made it to the finals of all four girls’ events in the SAI inter-regional centre badminton championship at Don Bosco School Indoor Stadium.

After having made it to the final of girls’ under-19 singles and doubles and under-16 doubles yesterday, Mridusmita overcame teammate Rituparna Kalita 22-20, 21-13 in the under-16 singles’ semifinal today. She will meet Roselina Begum, who is also from the same centre, in the under-16 singles’ final later this evening. Roselina defeated teammate Manmita Srikant 21-14, 21-19 in the semifinal.

Manmita Srikant of the North Eastern Sub-centre has also made it to the finals of both under-16 and under-19 girls’ doubles. Manmita partnered Rituparna Kalita to beat Southern Centre, Bangalore opponents Samhitha and Pooja 21-18, 21-15 to book the under-16 final berth.

Manmita’s and Anjali Kalita defeated Southern Centre opponents IRD Sravani and K. Aruna 21-13, 21-15 to make it to the under-19 doubles’ final.

Today, Dharamveer and Amaan of Central Centre, Bhopal will clash with Sandee-pan Ghosh and Kaushik Paul of Eastern Centre, Calcutta in the boys’ under-19 doubles final. The Dharamveer-Ama-an pair defeated the Nikhilesh Sarma and Anshuman Bora tandem of North Eastern Sub-Centre 21-17, 21-18 in the semifinals and the Sandeepan-Kaushik tandem prevailed over another home duo of Nirobjyoti Bora and Kunal Bora Dey 21-9, 17-21, 21-7.

Home lad Anshuman Bora went down to Kaushik Paul of Eastern Centre, Calcutta 11-21, 18-21 in the under-19 boys’ singles semifinal.
