For the army, it was a different ballgame altogether. The Red Horns Division conducted the Sonitpur district block-level football championship, 2005, for Batasipur block at Panbari tea estate football ground recently. Five teams participated in the matches which were played on a league basis. Manmohinipur tea estate beat Panbari tea estate 7-0 in the finals played on July 15. Over 3,000 spectators, including a large number of women and children witnessed the match. Brig. Manohar Singh, Commander, Chindits Brigade of the division, gave away the prizes.

Speaking on the occasion, he commended the teams for their sportsmanship. Shyam Arora, senior manager, Shyamguri tea estate, and all other tea estate managers present appreciated the efforts of the Army in promoting sports and creating goodwill through such events.

A dance by the local people and a display by the pipe band of Assam Rifles added colour to the occasion.

Block-level championship matches are also being organised at Mazbat, Balipukhri and Gohpur. The teams from the four blocks will participate in the district-level championship planned at Tezpur in August.

It is that time of the year when diseases strike Assam. The Red Horns Division conducted a medical camp at Rakshasmari, district Sonitpur, under the aegis of its Chindits Brigade. Specialist medical cover was provided both by the Army and the joint director, medical services, Sonitpur.

A team of 10 specialists from different medical departments treated nearly 2,500 patients from Dekiajuli and adjoining villages. Most were treated for malaria, gastro-enteritis, skin diseases, backache and malnutrition.

A rapid detection kit for instant detection of malaria was used and medicines for presumptive treatment of malaria were disbursed free of cost.

The camp was inaugurated by Col S.S. Prabhu, Commanding Officer, 162 Field Regiment. S. Saikia, SDM and HO, Dekiajuli public health centre, was also present. Lunch and refreshments were also offered. Tapan Bhattacharaya, VDP president of Rakshasmari, lauded the Army for organising the camp in such an inaccessible area.

The villagers enjoy cordial relations with the Army deployed in the area. The camp helped to strengthen the bond further and provided an opportunity for mutual interaction. Col Prabhu assured the residents that the Red Horns Division would continue to organise such camps for the people of Assam and take all necessary action to build peace, harmony and prosperity in the region.

Army School Tezpur is a school with a difference. And this has been proved time and again by its faculty members and students.

The school has consistently produced excellent results for the past five years.

It has not sat on its laurels ever since Usha Bali took over the reins as principal some years ago. This year, too, all the students of the school secured first division marks in the High School Leaving Certificate examination.

Prashant Harge was the topper, scoring 93.4 per cent, followed by Rahul Bhatt with 93.2 per cent and Sneha Paul with 91.8 per cent.

It also deserves special mention that this time, out of the 34 students who appeared for the exam, 30 scored over 75 per cent (distinction) marks in aggregate.

The school has also been accorded the distinction of being the best school in the small schools category by Army Welfare Education Society (AWES).

It was awarded the trophy at a ceremony held in New Delhi by Lt Gen. Mohinder Singh, Adjutant General recently.

Army School Tezpur has become a symbol of academic excellence with a consistently good performance .

A camp was organised on July 22 at Asha School, Narengi cantonment, to distribute aids and appliances of Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), Guwahati.

The programme was held under the aegis of the ministry of social justice and empowerment.

The camp was organised under the Assistance to Disabled Persons (ADIP) scheme in collaboration with Asha School.

ALIMCO is a non-profit organisation under the ministry of school justice and empowerment. The organisation is the largest manufacturer of aids and appliances for the orthopaedically handicapped and the visually and hearing disabled.

Neerja Nanda, president, AWWA 101 Area, distributed aids to the handicapped children of Asha school.

Among other distinguished guests were Shefali Mujla, member of the executive committee of the school.
