2672 athletes to attend Games

Altogether 2,672 athletes and 635 team officials will take part in the 12-day 12th South Asian Games to be held here and in Shillong from February 5 to 16.

Guwahati, Dec. 28: Altogether 2,672 athletes and 635 team officials will take part in the 12-day 12th South Asian Games to be held here and in Shillong from February 5 to 16.

Apart from the athletes and the officials, 47 senior officials and support staff will accompany the teams. The participating nations include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Altogether 1,505 men and 1,167 women athletes will compete.

These disciplines are archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, cycling, football, handball, hockey, judo, kabaddi, kho-kho, shooting, squash, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, weigh-tlifting, wrestling and wushu.

The Indian contingent comprises 519 athletes - 275 men and 244 women - along with 176 officials (108 men and 68 women). The Sri Lankan contingent comprises 484 athletes (257 men, 227 women) and 162 officials (133 men, 29 women). Third is Bangladesh with 409 athletes (241 men, 168 women) and 85 officials (74 men, 11 women). Exhibiting true sportsman spirit, earthquake-hit Nepal has 398 athletes.
