
Agartala: Flash floods inundated vast tracts of low-lying areas in Gomati, South Tripura, Khowai, Dhalai and West Tripura districts on Tuesday, rendering over 25,000 people homeless. They have taken shelter in relief camps.
On Wednesday, chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb took an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas in a chopper. He announced Rs 5,00,000 ex gratia for each family of the victims.
Four persons were killed in landslides and thunderstorms in the last two days, official sources said.
Speaking to this correspondent, an official of the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) said 217 houses were damaged across the state and 25,106 people from more than 6,000 families were sheltered in 180 relief camps.
Sankar Tripura, 50, a resident of Manughat in South Tripura district, was washed away by floodwaters, an SEOC report said. His body was later recovered from Chakidarpara in Manughat.

A few others sustained minor injuries in Khowai and Gomati districts.
The National Disaster Response Force, Tripura State Rifles and other security personnel were mobilised at Kailashahar in Unakoti district besides South Tripura, Gomati and West Tripura districts with motor boats to rescue people from the flood-hit areas.
Fresh landslides were reported from many places in Manubazaar-Srinagar and Sabroom-Srinagar roads in South Tripura district.
A Bailey bridge collapsed because of a landslide in the Srinagar area.
State Disaster Management Authority officer Sarat Das said according to latest reports, the Feni river in South Tripura district is flowing above danger level.
