Zonal athletics meet in city

Joydeep Nandi and Annie Francis emerged fastest senior athletes on the opening day of 20th ASISC zonal athletics meet at JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur on Friday.

While, Satyaraj Sardar and Deepika Kumari Singh won the honours in the junior boys' and girls' categories, respectively.

Joydeep of Beldih Church recorded 11.20 seconds tripping Gourav Singh (Gulmohur High School, 11.66 seconds) and Little Flower School's Ashish Gupta (11.72 seconds) while Annies won the sprint in 14.90 seconds.

Loyola's Niharika Sagar finished second by clocking 15.01 secs even as Akankhya Ashvari of Carmel Junior College managed the third spot with a timing of 15.08 seconds.

Satyaraj claimed the top slot in 11.64 secs against Loyola's Aditya Raj (11.88 secs) and Hill Top's Harsh Kumar Singh (11.99 secs). Deepika clocked 13.25 secs while brushing aside the challenge of Kerala Samajam Public School's U. Urwashi Rao 14.16 secs) and RVS Academy's Monika Tudu (14.20 seconds). Gulshan Mardi of Dayanand

Public School bagged the senior boys' 400m title with a timing of 54.66 secs whereas Bushra Anis of JH Tarapore excelled in the girls' section with 1:20.09 seconds. Gulmohur's I. Shobit and Riya Raj Jha of Motilal Nehru Public School picked the 400m title in the junior boys' and eves' categories by clocking 56.40 secs and 1:16.34 secs, respectfully.

The meet was inaugurated by Tata Steel sports wing administrator Mukul Choudhary, in the presence of Rajani Shekhar, treasurer Bihar & Jharkhand Region, ASISC and principal of DBMS English School, Sunita Sinha, zonal coordinator and principal of Gulmohar High School.

The two-day event is being organised by five schools - Sacred Heart Convent School, Carmel Junior College, Dayanand Public School, Beldih Church, Kerela Samajam Model School.

Over 650 students from 24 city-based schools affiliated to the Council of the Indian School Certificate Examination are competing in the meet.
