Speed demon kills 23-yr-old

Jamshedpur, Jan. 6: A 23-year-old woman was killed while her sister and niece were injured when their two-wheeler was hit by a speeding minibus near Rankini Mandir in Kadma this afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Sumitra Kumari Sharma and the injured were Sunita Sharma and Urmila Kumari, all residents of Road No. 4, Ramnagar in Kadma.

Sunita, who sustained injuries on her leg and waist, was rushed to Tata Main Hospital while Urmila escaped with minor injuries. Sunita’s condition is said to be out of danger.

At 1pm, Sumitra and her sister Sunita and Urmila came out of her house to go for shopping. The threesome stopped for refuelling at a petrol pump near the Rankini Mandir.

They covered a distance of five metres when a speeding minibus, coming from the same direction, hit the two-wheeler from behind. Sumitra’s head came under the rear wheel of the bus. The driver of the bus fled the scene abandoning the vehicle. The body was lying in the pool of blood till the police arrived on the scene.

Sunita and Urmila were rescued by the passers-by and taken to the hospital for treatment. Sumitra was taken to the hospital also where the doctors pronounced her brought dead.

Within minutes a group of youths arrived at the spot and tried to target the bus and the passengers on board. Some residents of the area and politician Banna Gupta prevented the irate mob.

According to eyewitness, the road was a busy one.

“I saw the minibus, which runs on Kagalnagar-Station route, coming at a maddening speed from Sonari. The three girls were about a turn towards Kadma market when there was a loud bang,” said Sudhir Singh, a resident of the area.

Ashok Sharma, the elder brother of the victims, said the three were on their way to Kadma market.

East Singhbhum deputy superintendent of police Sangita Kumari said police would take appropriate action against the minibus operator and the driver soon.
