If deputy commissioner Manish Ranjan has his way, Hazaribagh will soon be all smiles.
The district administration is in talks with cleft lip surgeon Dr Subodh Kumar Singh of Smile Pinki fame to host a free three-day camp for poor children suffering from this very common congenital deformity.
Though Dr Singh, a Varanasi-based plastic surgeon, is known to have given his consent for the noble cause, the dates and venue of the camp are yet to be finalised.
Smile Pinki (2008) is a 39-minute documentary directed by US filmmaker Megan Mylan. It is the story of Pinki Sonkar (5), a native of Rampur Dahaba village in Mirzapur, near Varanasi, whose life was transformed when a free surgery corrects her defect. The documentary had won an Academy Award.
Ranjan said he decided to call on Singh because there were several children with this deformity in the district.
“The doctor has given his consent. We have not finalised the dates and venue, but it will be held in the town,” he said.
