Dumka, Feb. 12: Protesting against the government’s indifferent attitude towards them, students of Sidho- Kanho-Murmu University (SKMU), Dumka, have decided not to accept the gold medals awarded to them for academic excellence.
“This has become a nightmare for us because when we mention such awards on our resume, people want to see them. The varsity is yet to give these awards to us and we find ourselves in an embarrassing situation,” a former student alleged.
Some said they often miss out on opportunities because they are unable to prove the fact that they have received these awards.
Over 15 students informed SKMU vice-chancellor Victor Tigga of their decision. Tigga has assured the students that would receive their medals soon.
Some students expressed their anguish against the indifferent attitude of the varsity towards its own toppers.
Also, during the convocation ceremony in 2008, selected recipients of the medals and wards did not receive their medals even after graduating a year ago. The varsity pleaded since it was not possible to give awards individually, it said students would be distributed the same later.
C.K. Singh, examination controller, SKMU, said the medals and awards were delayed due to technical problems, which would be sorted out soon.
