Ranchi, June 13: Mayor Asha Lakra, who recently returned from Gujarat, has found Ahmedabad example fit for Ranchi and is planning to replicate at least four of its development models here to improve solid waste management and conserve water bodies.

Taking a cue from this "planned" western city, the Ranchi mayor is mulling a solid waste management plant, a building material recycling unit and a kids' zone on the lines of those developed by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

Also, the mayor wants to give a facelift to Ranchi Lake, turning it into a major attraction of the city.

Mayor Lakra, with a 46-member team of ward councillors and civic officials, went on a week-long tour to Ahmedabad last month to learn the civic system there. During the trip from May 27 to June 4, Lakra met her Ahmedabad counterpart Meenakshiben Patel and other civic officials.

Ranchi deputy mayor Sanjeev Vijayvargiya, 39 councillors and five senior RMC officials accompanied Lakra.

Elaborating on their "findings", Vijayvargiya said the civic body there had developed an amusement park and kids' zone around Kankaria Lake in Ahmedabad.

"The park boasts a food court, toy trains and boating facilities, among others. The kids' zone offers 12 types of learning activities like ambulance care service, first aid and fire fighting etc <>to educate as well as entertain the visitors. We want to develop Ranchi Lake and set up kids' zone near the water body," he said.

Vijayvargiya further said the RMC was also considering projects to process and recycle garbage and building material waste.

"They (Ahmedabad civic officials) prepare organic manure from solid waste and make bricks and tiles from leftover building materials. We want to set up a solid waste processing plant and a recycling unit to reuse leftover building materials here," he added.

According to him, the proposals will be discussed at the RMC's next board meeting.

In fact, the RMC board meeting was scheduled today but none of the councillors turned up, prompting the mayor to postpone the meeting till further notification.
