Jamshedpur, July 28: Six institutions vied for the top slot at the inter-school quiz contest finals, which were held today at Michael John Auditorium on the occasion of JRD Tata’s 99 th birth anniversary.
The participants were quizzed on the doyen of steel industry and Bharat Ratna JRD Tata. About 22 city schools took part in the contest, of which six qualified for the finals after cracking the preliminary rounds.
The teams that pit their wits in the finals included Rajendra Vidyalaya, Sacred Heart Convent School, Narbheram Hansraj English School, KMPM Inter College, Kasidih Boys’ High School and Kerala Samajam Model School.
The teams were oozing with confidence and had done their homework. However, questions like “Where was JRD Tata buried?” “Name the rented bungalow in Bombay where he lived?” “Which session of the Congress did JRD Tata attend?” and “Which was the inaugural flight of Tata Airlines?” left the participants scratching their heads.
The Sacred Heart Convent girls maintained their lead from the first round. There was healthy competition between the teams.
The quiz comprised six rounds — general, aviation, awards, buzzer, picture and audio-visual. Scared Heart Convent secured full points in the audio-visual round, where participants were shown a clipping of JRD Tata’s last interview, which was aired on Delhi Doordarshan and then asked questions on it. The winning team was asked, “What according to JRD Tata are the good qualities in Indians?” And pat came the reply, “Discipline and common sense.”
The buzzer round had the audience glued to their seats. Each team had to state whether a statement was true or false. Unlike other rounds, the teams lost five points with every wrong answer.
Soumya Mittal and Ishani Singh of Sacred Heart Convent won the contest with 95 points and KMPM Inter School secured the second place with 65 points. Narbheram Hansraj English School finished third.
